Things

I really haven’t really posted anything for a while, I regret to say. But things haven’t really been happening too much in Mo’s world.

I had an awesome Poker night at my house with some friends which was very good fun!

I’ve had lots of band practices for this awesome gig at a BOTB that we’re going to play in. We worked out a 15 minute setlist of 1) Hysteria, 2) (I’ve Got To Get Out Of) This Place/Track 4, 3) Down On Me

We played this gig/BOTB, and although we were actually the best band there… (none of that emo/screamo nonsense, nor did we play Razorlight?!?!?!?!) we didn’t actually win. That was probably due to teh amount of people ther supporting us. Yes, some people love us, as we should be loved, but alas we did not bring a coach full of supporters!

My iPod’s hard disk passed away, so now I’m looking for a replacement Hard Disk for it. Have come up with a nice list of players to steal it from though! - Apple iPod 20gb (3rd/4th G), iRiver H120/iHp-120, Samsung YH-920. These all work as they have the same hard disk as the iPod in them. So, by my reasoning if I was to purchase one off of eBay then I could take it apart and steal the hard disk for my precious and precocious little iPod!

Apart form that chat, not too much has been happening. But none-the-less its all good fun!

Badly Drawn Boy

Although it seems like I just posted the review of the Wolfmother gig not 5 mins ago, it really was last weeks effort with a bit of work needed just now to finish it!

Anyway, last night I happened to go to a Badly Drawn Boy concert at the Queens Hall in Edinburgh. As you may know, or may not know, the Queens Hall is a fairly small venue, almost church like in its interior due to the seats, which are basically pews…
A friend of mine went to see the Cribs here a while back and said how strange it was moshing amongst pews. But whatever floats your boat!

Back to the gig though, the warmup act was someone called Malcolm Middleton, who was this singer on acoustic guitar with a drummer who played on about half of the songs. If you just listened to the music, you could quite easily mistake it for Badly Drawn Boy, as it is fairly “Badly Drawn Boyish” so to speak! But the lyrics were quite possibly depressing, one of the songs was called “We’re all going to die” and an another optimistic one went on about how his songs were shite. After this happy introduction, Badly Drawn Boy came on. The one word that could really be used to describe him was MOODY! For the first few songs, he was really good, playing a few from the first album by himself. But as soon as the band came on he kept getting all irratable/lazy/moody. I mean that he introduced songs by saying that ‘this song would probably sound shit’ or ‘it would be a fooking miracle if this song came out okay’. He then had incidents where he would stop and start various songs on the keyboard because his wrist was hurting from playing it, only after one song! There were also incidents were he was positive that the effect on the guitar was wrong when it clearly sounded fine, this happened mainly on “Fewer Words”. He did even have to take in the break in the middle for a cigarette, but I suppose we should be thankful for this because when he came back he was so much more happier and positive. He even apoligised for his earlier behaviour, but some of the crowd had already left! The second half of the set was much better, as he basically was just not so darn pessimistic and did not make as many mistakes or complain. Most of the songs that were played were from the newest album, Born In The UK, but there a few from One Plus One Is One and Bewilderbeast.

Overall, I thought that it was really good and despite his moodiness and shortcomings, he played well on the majority of songs. The one thing that amazed me was the pessimism of artists in that genre, but if thats your kind of thing, then fair enough!

Wolfmother!!! - Edinburgh

Well having just got back from the Wolfmother gig last night at the Corn Exchange In Edinburgh, I thought I’d mention how good it was!

We (a friend and I) got there about 20 mins before the doors opened, mainly just because I don’t like being at the back of the queue and I wanted a decent viewpoint in the concert… I was surprised though how few people were there that early. Hardly worth complaining about as when they let us in we were basically at the barrier, 1 person away, so we had fairly a immense view!! As usual they have huge gaps between everything, so it wasn’t until roughly 40 mins after that the support act came on. They were called something like Wolf Cubs (I’ll get the proper name later, EDIT: apparently its “Wolf & Cub”) but anyway, they really weren’t all that good. It was basically just noise, they did have two drummers, which I suppose made up for the lack of life in their bassist! But it was nothing as special as “Deerhoof,” one of Radiohead’s support bands!
Once Wolfmother came on it was absolutely insane! They played a huge hour and a half set where they went through their whole album in a great order, ‘Dimension’ first and ending with ‘Joker & The Thief’ which was such a good song to end with, especially with the the huuuuge intro they did, building up the immense guitar riff. All of the songs were generally so well performed, and the ‘Space Noises’ bit in White Unicorn were so great and so typically Zeppelinish! Speaking of Zeppelin, they even played a cover of Communication Breakdown!

Being at the front, you couldn’t help noticing Andrew Stockdale’s (the guitarist/vocalist) amazingly cool fashion and dress sense. He wears the tightest jeans, incredibly 70s ish aswell as some groovy silver slipper things. Coupled with his iconic ‘fro, and his craaazy lead vocals and guitar, it is not hard to see why he really should be a ‘Rock Icon’ along the lines of Hendrix. He should be remembered as a complete legend as he really is! The bassist/keys player, Chris Ross also has a uniquely great way of playing the keyboard. The keyboard that he uses is clearly well used and fairly battered and has effects pedals actually bolted to the top of it to stop them falling off. He plays in such a crazy manner; lifting the keyboard up during solos in such an obscene way (a good kind of obscene though!), and the Mind’s Eye solo that is soooooo good on the album is just so much better live.

Overall, it was an absoultely superb gig, without a question one of the best that I have attended in my short life… Wolfmother are one of Australia’s greatest contributions to Rock music at the moment, and hopefully they will continue to make great music in the future!

Tonight

Tonight, I should be having a great time, mainly because I have what promises to be an absolutely brilliant concert, in the form of Wolfmother!

I probs won’t get any pictures as it will be fairly crushing… But I shall maybe do a write-up kinda thing tomorrow!
